Cosmetic Dentistry*
Cosmetic dentistry enhances the appearance of your teeth using a variety of techniques including restoration, placement, straightening, crowning, bonding or whitening. Through these and other techniques, we will work to improve the appearance of your smile, giving you a new look that can help boost your self-confidence. At University Dental Associates, we recognize designing the perfect smile requires true artistic skill and experience to create a truly one-of-a-kind smile that is absolutely unique to you.
If you are considering cosmetic dentistry, here are some questions you should ask yourself. The answers to these questions will help you and your dentist identify the elements of your smile that you do not like. They will also help clarify what you would like to see at the completion of your treatment.
- When you look in the mirror, do you like the way your teeth look?
- Do you dislike the color of your teeth?
- Are there spaces between your teeth?
- Do you have any cracks or chips on your teeth or are you missing any teeth?
- Do you have crooked teeth?
- Do you feel your teeth are too long or too short?
- Are you pleased with the shape and position of your teeth?
*Cosmetic dentistry is not an area of dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association.
Professional teeth whitening can boost your confidence by giving you a brighter smile that can revitalize your entire face. It removes any stains that are on your teeth, even the deep ones that are difficult to remove at home with an over-the-counter teeth whitener. Some of these solutions can be applied at home, while other treatments are completed in the office. The level of whitening can be adjusted to meet your own special needs. If you have sensitive teeth or are concerned about sensitivity when whitening, you may want to consider a fluoride treatment. Take-home whitening: Our University Dental Associates professionals will take an impression of your teeth to design custom-fit trays that fit securely around each tooth. A whitening gel is added to the trays and the trays are placed in your mouth. The gel is available as a take home day or night solution. About two weeks after the procedure, you should notice a visibly, whiter smile.
In-office whitening: This system is a great alternative to the tray whitening system and utilizes a bleaching process that lightens discolored teeth. It is performed in the dental office by a dentist or dental professional. The procedure takes about two hours. A special gel is applied to the teeth and a special light works with the gel to break up stains and discolorations. After about two hours, the patient’s smile should be about eight shades whiter. As an added benefit, this solution includes take home trays to maintain whitening. In office whitening is not for every patient and is not available at all locations. Talk to your dentist to find out if it’s right for you.
Veneers are thin, tooth-colored coverings that are custom designed and permanently bonded to your tooth. The purpose is to protect the surface of damaged teeth. Veneers have other benefits including durability, an improved smile, and little to no removal of existing tooth structure. Veneers protect the surface of damaged teeth and may eliminate the need for more extensive treatment. Made out of state of the art porcelain, veneers mimic the properties of enamel, creating a beautiful, natural-looking smile.
Invisalign is a new way of straightening teeth without calling attention to them. The procedure involves wearing a series of nearly undetectable aligners instead of the traditional brackets and wires. They are made specifically to fit your lifestyle allowing you to eat, drink, brush, and floss easily. Our patients love their Invisalign aligners because they are clear and virtually undetectable on teeth. And since Invisalign is removable, you can easily take the clear aligners out for special events. For all these reasons, Invisalign treatment is also a great option for adult patients.
Your orthodontist will determine if Invisalign is appropriate for you during an examination, and if they are a match, he/she will prescribe a treatment plan and take an impression of your teeth. This impression is submitted to Invisalign, which uses 3-D computer technology to create a series of precisely customized aligners. Patients wear each set of aligners for about two weeks and, as a result, teeth move gradually week by week until you’ve achieved the intended results- straighter teeth.
Most Invisalign patients visit their orthodontists no more than those who wear braces. The length of treatment is approximately the same as well.
